I see it every night in your eyes as you return from work exhausted. Or maybe you’re still looking for work but haven’t told me. The details really don’t matter to me because I love you unconditionally. All I really care about is a good meal and some of your attention. It doesn’t have to be a lot - just a scratch behind the ears or a quick belly rub. Heck, if times are tough I’m willing to cut back too. You could honestly skip the “wellness” visits to the vet and save that for the important stuff. But I’m becoming really worried lately about my life here with you. Every day I see dogs and cats wandering the streets on our block. Some have collars and tags others not. But they tell me that their families set them free, because they are losing their homes. Or sometimes it was the loss of a job. Being set free was better than going to a shelter and waiting on death row. And besides, nature can take over or someone else will adopt me. It’s for the best these homeless pets say. But I can tell in the sounds of their barks and meows that it’s a lie. They’re scared and miss their families with all their hearts. So let me be frank with you. I’m part of the family. I’ll fight to stay here with you. It’s not the size of the home or the quality of the food and toys; it’s the fact that I have a safe place by your side. I really can’t tell the difference between a high rent district and the worst zip code in the city. If you’re with me, I’m home. If you’ve got to cut back on the budget, so will I. I don’t care if you clip coupons for pet food. I don’t mind if you can’t put out the big spread and offer me every new treat and toy. As long as I get enough food to be healthy, I’m good to go. Just don’t throw me out like a worn old pair of shoes. We’ve been through too much together. And you have no idea how scary the thought of being without you is. So as times get tougher, please don’t leave me out of the family plan. You can lose the house, sell the car, downsize to a smaller place and a tighter budget, but please keep me in the equation. Don’t downsize the family. You made a commitment to me when you brought me home – that we would be a forever family. Don’t welch on that promise.
