I have been told this is a JAM JAR / JAM POT. Used in the period around 1900 when people made their own jam and put it up in miscellaneous often unattractive containers. When the jam was served at a formal tea the container was put inside the jam jar, the hole in the bottom facilitated the removal of the container afterwards. It is beautiful and looks hand painted, and in very good condition with some normal ware, but does have a mark inside the lid but it is not through the lid and 2 small chips on the bottom (underside )of the saucer. IT has a painted number on the inside of the big piece and inside the lid. This could be worth much more than I am selling it for!! $45.
