The Pentax K1000 is inarguably one of the all-time icons of 35mm photography. Touted for it’s indestructibility and simplicity, it is no wonder that 3 million of them were produced between 1976 and 1997. The K-mount lens is a story in itself and, like Nikon, Pentax never abandoned their bayonet mounting system. All K-mount lenses, with the exception of the “DA” and “FA-J” aperture-less models will work in manual mode on a K1000. There are at least 20 million of the lenses made by Pentax and every aftermarket lens manufacturer still in existence. These lenses are usually relatively inexpensive. Not inexpensive though are the Japanese made “Asahi” K1000 bodies, which are in great demand. The camera offered here is an Asahi K1000, and it should not be confused with the later Chinese version that used cheaper materials. The included lens is one of the faster SMC-M normal lenses, the f1.7. It carries a slight premium over the more common f1.8 and f2.0 50mm models. One of two or three film cameras that are overwhelmingly recommended for photography classes, this classic requires that you learn the three basic fundamentals of photography---shutter speed, aperture, and film speed. It is entirely manual, and the battery is only required to power the light meter. A note on the light meter…K1000’s do not have an on-off function , so one MUST keep the lens cap on when not in use to prevent draining the battery. If you want a smarter Pentax 35mm camera then you would be more inclined to the diminutive Pentax ME, MG, or MX models. This Asahi Pentax K1000 is very presentable, without any dings or dents, and only the slightest signs of use. The body and the lens are in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. This is as good a condition as one is likely to see in a 25 year-old camera that was ever used. The only signs of operation are a couple of FAINT scuff marks [don’t qualify as scratches] near the tripod mount. This body is that fine. The features list of the FE2 is extensive: Electronically controlled Titanium shutter capable of 1/4000th of a second; flash synch up to 1/250th of a second; battery-less manual shutter release and flash synch at 1/250th of a second; Aperture Priority mode with incident light metering; TTL flash control circuitry; interchangeable focusing screens---really all of the features of the later FA, except Matrix metering, and the modes of Shutter Priority and Program. The FE2 was one of the most finely engineered and assembled pieces of equipment Nikon ever designed, sort of like an FE on steroids, and it endures even today. It will accept all “F” mount lenses, except the “G” series, which lack aperture rings. This collector camera is graded LIKE NEW-. It obviously is an item strictly for the connoisseur; therefore I would appreciate only serious inquires. Fresh batteries, and a Nikon body cap are included. Zoom lenses have changed the way a photographer packs his camera bag, and many of these zooms now rival the image fidelity of prime [fixed focal length] lenses. The truth is though, if you are after the very best capture possible and you have the time, space, and money to avoid compromises…primes are still your best bet. This like new and amazingly sharp 200mm f3.5 lens from Vivitar is one of the most cost-effective avenues to pro-level images you will ever encounter. Not to say that all Vivitar lenses are worth a penny, the 1990’s and newer versions are, frankly, kinda junky. But I have yet to find a Vivitar made by legendary builder Komine that wasn’t at or near the front of the pack in most respects, at least for under a $1000. Snap this finely-crafted metal and glass lens onto your Nikon DSLR and see how “control of your imaging” is made easy. The time will come that digital and autofocus/autoexposure will be old hat, and shooters will again desire to know why the images turn out as they do. I can tell you that I use manual focus lenses most of the time on my Nikon DSLR’s, simply because I get better results. Turn down the lights and it just isn’t even a contest anymore---aperture rings are a thing of beauty in low light. This hefty but not overwhelming lens has both “rabbit ears” and AI metering. The front filter thread is 62mm, has an integrated hood, and measures from a compact 4 ¾ to 61/4 inches fully extended. The condition is LIKE NEW and comes with front and rear lens caps. On the hunt for a very nice portrait lens for your Nikon DSLR or SLR, but don’t want to shell out the Nikon bucks? Well here is one of those “best kept secrets”…a KOMINE manufactured Vivitar 135mm f2.8 prime with a Nikon pre-AI mount. The front filter thread is 55mm. The period in which Komine was Vivitar’s “goto” builder [late 70’s-early 80’s] were the glory days for that firm, and I know a few shooters that collect every version of the Komine built Vivitars, because they always were at or near the top of their class in image quality. The material and build quality is also first class. The only criticism I have of Komines is that the zooms are among the most complicated lenses at just about any focal length, and therefore more difficult to work on. This can be the price paid to have the stellar resolution numbers they return in tests. The result of this is that often the aperture assembly is buried in the middle of the lens, where it is susceptible to degraded oil on the blades. If you see a Komine lens with oil---avoid it as it likely was stored in a hot place where the helicoid grease broke down…. and the apertures are usually a real bear to get to. If the blades are clean it is a pretty good bet that they will remain so after 30 years. This lens rivals the equivalent f2.8 and f3.5 lenses from Nikon [forget the Q-Nikkor f2.8 135mm for anything close to perfection]. I have taken side-by-side shots on a D90 and you can’t tell the images from the two lenses apart. If you have done much portrait work you are aware that manual focus and aperture is often the preferred mode for composing your frames. The lens has the “rabbit ears” for the older Nikons. The bad news is that I do not think there is enough of a “lip” to enable this lens to be AI’d. The good news is that because it doesn’t have a “lip” it mounts easily not only on D40’s, et al, but also on D90’s, D300’s, etc. [non-AI Nikon lens frequently will mount on D40’s but not D300’s because of the “lip”]. This is a case of a “picture tells a thousand words”. I like to do my own comparison testing of lenses, which is one reason I buy so many. Occasionally a lens far exceeds my initial expectations, which brings me to this lens. Perhaps the most renown of the Vivitar “SERIES 1” lenses was the 70-210mm, and of the three best versions, the “beer can” f3.5 KIRON version is the best known. Side-by-side, it is obvious that this 75-205mm Kiron-made Vivitar is something of a 9/10’s version [62mm front element vs. 67mm], as it looks and feels so remarkably similar. A constant F3.8 aperture is fairly fast for this focal length, and in practice this lens exposes better than my Kiron “SERIES 1” by a half-stop, and faster than my 70-210mm Nikon f4 [also 62mm front thread] by a full stop! Hard to understand, the “SERIES 1” has a larger front element, and reputation, but side-by-side shots with each of these three lenses on a Nikon d40 and Nikon d90 prove that the f3.8 will get the same exposure at a smaller aperture than the other two. And, on a 22” flat panel monitor, identical captures of downtown Reno zoomed in from over two miles, display equal detail and contrast. So there you have it, something for nothing. I was so surprised by this particular comparison that I will send anyone that asks the three unaltered images to compare via email. And this lens will annihilate the Nikon 55-200mm kit lens!A final point. I know everyone wants auto-focus, but once you have spent some time with a manual focus lens on your Nikon digital you will wonder how you surrendered so much quality and control for so long. This is particularly true when the available light drops below a certain level, then you can make a manual lens do thing that auto lenses simply refuse to do. This is an AI [automatic indexing] lens that also has the old “rabbit ears” for the really old Nikon bodies, so it will meter on many Nikon or Fuji digital camera. The truth of the matter though is that your camera’s LCD monitor is the best exposure meter you could ever have to assure correct exposures.This lens is in EXCELLENT condition and comes with front and rear lens caps. The Nikon FM is without a doubt one of the most respected cameras of the film era. Somewhat expensive in it’s day, many shooters lament it going out of production. It was so popular that Nikon resurrected the name with the anemic FM10, due to the demand to bring it back. There is only a basic visual similarity between the two cameras, as the original FM is the epitome of durability, internal precision, and deft function. This icon of the 35mm genre was the favorite of many photojournalists [think National Geographic] because it would operate flawlessly under the most severe conditions, and was not dependent on the battery for any purpose other than the light meter. It might have rivaled the Pentax K1000 as a photography student favorite, except that it cost too much. How times have changed, a camera that less than a decade ago retailed for $600-700 for the body alone can now be had for a couple hundred, and much less if there are significant signs of use. If you enjoy the fundamentals of photography an FM is a no-brainer. The subsequent FM2 and FM2n do offer several improvements over the FM…..faster shutter speed and flash synch, and interchangeable focusing screens. The original FM does have one major advantage over the later versions----you can use non-AI lenses on them!! Try and put one of those fine older “S” lenses on an FM2 and you will break off the AI tab for sure. It conveniently folds out of the way on the FM. Something to remember if you have some vintage Nikkor glass. Of course “depth-of-field” preview is a function.This is the all black body. The reason all black bodies are so much more desirable has been debated for decades ….some say it is a tradition dating back to the Vietnam War. Really doesn’t make much sense because they show wear so much faster than the Black & Chrome versions---but they always bring a handsome premium, particularly if the “brassing” is minimal. Having said that, this is the rare example that has actually been used, but has indeed escaped the fate of all black paint cameras….brassing. Unless you show up with a microscope, you are not going to find brass showing through the paint. OK, there are a couple of INFINITESIMAL spots, but for all intents and purposes this is an “unbrassed” black FM. And it has no dings and dents, film advance is velvet smooth, and the light meter works perfectly. It grades EXCELLENT+. Front and side mirror foam and all light seals are brand new. The Canon T70 is, quite simply, a thing of beauty. Sleek and industrial, it manages to do most anything you would ask of a camera with style and a minimum of effort. Winner of both the “European Camera of the Year” and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s “Good Design Award” the year it was introduced, it is a pleasure to view, hold, and shoot. An unfussy design, one can learn to become competent in its operation, both automatic and manual, in about 30 minutes. From that point on you are rewarded with an uncommonly effortless path to fine photography. The controls are minimal and easy to understand, and it meters light in both “centerweighted average” and “selective area” modes. User controls settings are in Tele and Wide Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual Modes. Under and overexposure is clearly indicated in the viewfinder, as are computer overrides to radically incorrect shutter speeds. Overrides can be cancelled with a shutter speed lock. Film advance is automatic, and multiple exposures can be captured at almost one frame per second. Film rewinds at the touch of a button. The build quality is impressive, to my eye exceeding that of those other three, and probably matching the Nikkormat. This is a 45 year-old machine that was definitely built to last. The feature list is fairly impressive for the era, stop-down match needle metering, 1/1000th top shutter speed, convenient quick-load [QL] film loading mechanism, self-timer, hot-shoe, and mirror lock-up. This example is extra-clean with very minimal paint loss, a working meter, and no dings or dents. The mirror foam and light shields have just been replaced, and that’s a $40 service from any camera shop. There are those of you out there who have bought that “bargain” camera on CL or flEaBay, only to have to put another $75-100 into reconditioning, so you know why that matters. The lens is the 50mm f1.8 that originally came with this top-of-the-line camera, and it is put together with the same eye to durability that the body is. This is a somewhat rare collector film Single Lens Reflex camera manufactured by the German firm Rolleiflex in Singapore. It is a very interesting camera, which is notable for having perhaps the best viewfinder [very bright, diagonal split-screen focusing] ever installed on a 35mm camera. This particular example is in very nice condition, the only readily evident marks being the typical brassing where the strap rings have superficially marred the black paint. Though reasonably sturdy it is fairly lightweight for a metal framed camera, however it isn’t in the “indestructible” class of a Nikon FM or Nikkormat. Not that it should see more than token use, being more of an item to ride the display shelf while you watch it’s value increase every year that you own it. Like the Nikon FM, it is an entirely manual camera, only needing the battery to power the light meter. Everything is in working order, and a fresh 625 battery is installed.The included normal lens is a desirable Rollei Planar 50mm f1.8 designed by Carl Zeiss and manufactured by Rolleiflex under license. These lenses are as rare or rarer than the camera, and it is more typical to encounter the camera bodies without a lens. The lens would be graded in Excellent condition cosmetically, but the focusing is SLIGHTLY stiff, and is therefore being graded as VERY GOOD. Many camera buffs claim that the Nikon F2 had the finest construction of any 35mm ever made. As someone who has closely examined hundreds of cameras, particularly Nikon’s, this is hard to dispute. They almost make a Nikon F seem crude. And as fine as F3’s are, they seem mass-produced next to an F2. The precision and build quality is discernable; similar to what you experience when you open up the finest Swiss watches. This 1972 version is equipped with the DP-1 Photomic removable viewfinder, and the integrated light meter actually works fine. The interchangeable focusing screen is an “A” model. From the DP-11 forward all AI [automatic indexing] lenses, even without the fork, will meter. Offered is a “like new” Nikon 70-200mm lightweight autofocus zoom lens that you can fit in your coat pocket. The autofocus is quick and stealthy, and the optics live up to the Nikkor reputation. Having said that, it is a hundred dollar kit lens that is affordable because it is not made like a $1500 Nikkor 70-200. There is plenty of plastic in the lens, and that is pretty typical for most of the entry-level lenses from all of the major manufacturers. The Pentax K1000 is inarguably one of the all-time icons of 35mm photography. Touted for it’s indestructibility and simplicity, it is no wonder that 3 million of them were produced between 1976 and 1997. The K-mount lens is a story in itself and, like Nikon, Pentax never abandoned their bayonet mounting system. All K-mount lenses, with the exception of the “DA” and “FA-J” aperture-less models will work in manual mode on a K1000. There are at least 20 million of the lenses made by Pentax and every aftermarket lens manufacturer still in existence. These lenses are usually relatively inexpensive. Not inexpensive though are the Japanese made “Asahi” K1000 bodies, which are in great demand. The camera offered here is an Asahi K1000, and it should not be confused with the later Chinese version that used cheaper materials. The included lens is one of the faster SMC-M normal lenses, the f1.7. It carries a slight premium over the more common f1.8 and f2.0 50mm models. One of two or three film cameras that are overwhelmingly recommended for photography classes, this classic requires that you learn the three basic fundamentals of photography---shutter speed, aperture, and film speed. It is entirely manual, and the battery is only required to power the light meter. A note on the light meter…K1000’s do not have an on-off function , so one MUST keep the lens cap on when not in use to prevent draining the battery. If you want a smarter Pentax 35mm camera then you would be more inclined to the diminutive Pentax ME, MG, or MX models. This Asahi Pentax K1000 is very presentable, without any dings or dents, and only the slightest signs of use. The body and the lens are in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. The light meter is accurate and responsive, the lights seals and mirror foam are brand new, and a fresh 376 battery is included.
