The Kansas Short Grass Motorcycle Club is proud to announce our regularly scheduled Second Sunday daylong motorcycle tour this coming Sunday, June 14th. Sign-in begins at 9 AM and the tour promptly leaves at 10 AM. Our meeting location is 23rd and Louisiana Streets (Checkers Foods parking lot) Lawrence, Kansas. This tour is open to anyone over the age of 18. All makes of motorcycles are welcome. Our route will take us south of Lawrence on U.S. 59 to Baldwin Junction and then west to Council Grove on U.S. 56. We will take a brief rest stop in Overbrook to stretch our legs and then continue west through Scranton, Burlingame, Osage City and finally Council Grove. In Council Grove we will take on fuel and briefly stop at the actual location of the signing for the treaty between the U.S. Government and the Native American tribes that allowed for western settlers to pass through the area peaceably. The known location of this event is marked by the remaining tree stump where the treaty was signed over 150 years ago. The name of this treaty and its location in the \"Council Grove\" stand of trees lent its name to this early frontier town. Council Grove is steeped in history and everyone is encouraged to revisit this early Kansas settlement on their own when you have more time to stop and take in the many self-guided tours. We will dine at the Hays House Restaurant in downtown Council Grove. Founded in 1857, the Hays House is the oldest continually operated restaurant west of the Mississippi River. They offer a great luncheon buffet of roast beef, fried chicken, homemade rolls, salad bar, vegetables and more. The cost is $12.95 per person which includes the salad bar and a drink. Having eaten there just a couple of weeks ago during the pathfinder tour, I can attest to it being well worth the money. As we approach the restaurant after stopping for gas, we will pose for a group photo in front of the historical bank building down the block and across the street. We will leave the bikes parked here and walk the half block back down the street to Hays House for lunch. The KSGMC has reserved a separate dining room that should accommodate our group so we can all sit together. After lunch, we will proceed west on U.S. 56 to county route 149 and turn right heading north. We will hook into K-4 near White City and take this route into Alta Vista. Coming out of Alta Vista, we will exit right onto the Mill Creek Scenic Parkway and follow this path into Alma. We will stop over briefly in Alma to have ice cream and cold drinks at the renovated White Eagle gasoline station on the corner. After a brief rest stop, we will proceed south on K-99 and pick up K-4 again heading east into Topeka. Leaving Topeka, we will skirt along the south edge of town and connect into Topeka Blvd.. heading south and exiting onto 45th Street (Stull Road) east and then will come into Lawrence via U.S. 40. This ride will be approximately 200 miles in length and will take in some of the most scenic routes in Kansas. The topography of the area includes expansive vistas, scenic bluffs, rolling hills, stone walls and meandering creeks. Be sure to bring your camera, sunblock, a water bottle along with an eager attitude to have fun! In short, this months Second Sunday daylong motorcycle tour is the one not to miss. Guests are invited to ride with us on a trial tour basis for just $20/single and $25/couples riding two-up. This bike is in excellent condition. Only used for trail riding. It is equipped with an automatic transmission, \"shift on the fly\" 4 wheel drive, a front differential lock lever and a winch. It only has about 100 miles and approximately 30 hours on it. There are a few scratches on the fenders from riding through brush but thats about it. No mechanical defects.
