This 15 minute gondola cart ride takes you to the top of Mount Howard and offers 2 miles of pretty easy hiking trails. You have a view that seems as if it goes forever with views of 3 different states on really clear days. Eagle Cap Pack Stations is another one of our favorite places to stop by. They have little ponies that our kids love riding, but if you have more time, you could go on one of their day rides on very gentle horses. Feel more like hanging in the water? Then, maybe enjoy their parasailing. I have yet to try this, but have heard really great reports that it is quite fun! This company was awarded the Red Carpet Award by our local Chamber of Commerce for outstanding service. Stop in and see why!Wallowa Lake Karts offers go carts and mini golf as well as a basketball hoop. I love riding the go carts and racing around the track trying to beat my nephews. Today, there were such huge flakes that they quickly covered our pickup, and our impromptu picnic. Huge, fat, fluffy flakes that just fell heavily on the earth....it was a magical experience!Sometimes we take our snowmobiles and go out to Salt Creek Summit because that is where the best snow is, the groomed trails, and the warming shack, but it is also where all of the people go, and today, our family just needed some quiet family time before Christmas, New Years, and tax prep time comes around. We rode around for a couple of hours, covering ground that is my husbands old stomping ground for elk, and also the ground that he introduced me to this year for my first elk hunt. It started out snowing in the morning, then turned off fairly decent, and it was a good day to get the wood in for the winter, but also to spend some time with the family.While we were taking our lunch break, we started talking about the US Forest Service Travel Management Plan that is effecting all national forests and the devastating results that will trickle down to anyone that likes to use the Wallowa Whitman National Forest, as well as other land throughout the United States.All national forests are currently engaged in developing a travel management plan that includes significant road closures. It is true that some of the proposed closures include roads that have grown over with vegetation and are impassable for vehicles. However, not all closures involve these impassable roads. Some of these roads are ones that have been enjoyed for years as locals and visitors used these to hunt, photograph, berry pick, camp, picnic, fish, etc. Access to your favorite camping spots, photographing spot, bird watching spot, firewood cutting spot, berry picking spot, etc., will be closed if the Forest Service passes thru this Travel Management Plan. I do agree that there is room for SOME road closures, but it does not need to be as drastic as what is being proposed.It is IMPORTANT for residents of this land, and any visitor that would like to see the land in the future, to identify which Forest Service roads that they use for recreation and any other purposes. Citizen input must be submitted to the Forest Service in specific formats, NOT a broad range letter stating complaints. These specific formats can be found at the US Forest Service Travel Management Plan (look for the link that says PUBLIC COMMENT FORM) and MUST be submitted by November 16th, 2007. You can submit these SPECIFIC FORMS by mail, or by email, but they MUST be submitted by November 16th, 2007.
