A peek at Cindis worldSchool starts tomorrow!School starts in Enterprise tomorrow, and started in Joseph on Monday. I know it feels like parts have summer have lasted a long time, but others (like having the kids around all day) feels like it flashed and then it was gone. So, what did I do today to send my kids back off to school with a smile? We took the day off...which is very rare around here in summer. We tend to make hay while the sunshines, and we make a LOT of hay!! I let the kids chose anything they wanted to do today and since they are only 6 and 8 (and a half she would tell you), that is a very safe thing to give them! So, after much deliberation, they both decided that they wanted to go to La Grande and swim at the Veterans Memorial Pool and, of course, eat lunch at Mc Donalds. At 8:30, we took off this morning from our home in Enterprise, Oregon, and headed about 1.25 hours over to La Grande, Oregon. We did have to have a coffee stop at the Blue Banana in Lostine because I had a free coupon for a cup of coffee there. Then, off to La Grande we went. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the kids discussing what possibilities today may hold for them....Once we arrived in La Grande, we did some small school clothes shopping, and then headed to the new Mc Donalds. After grabbing a quick lunch, we then went to the Veterans Pool which is over by the baseball fields, close to the freeway entrance that feeds kids going to Eastern Oregon University (or the Burger King exit depending upon what you prefer!). The kids and I had the WHOLE place to ourselves for over an hour and a half, just the 3 of us...swimming, going down the water slide, shooting some hoops, jumping off the diving board and did I mention going down the water slide??Then, to top the day off, we hit the local Dairy Queen for some much needed refreshments and then headed back over to our beautiful valley that I hear so many people refer to as Gods Country, and I always agree when I see those beautiful mountains as you come from Wallowa. A truly fantastic day we had. Not one single argument (true story for you parents--NOT ONE!) and nothing but kids that were so perfect with their manners, sharing, and everything, that I thanked them when we got home for spending the absolutely perfect day with me, and that this was now going to become an annual event! And, while I am on the THANK YOU band wagon, I want to send you all past, present and future clients as well as the fantastic staff that I have, a big THANK YOU for a great year thus far, and for providing me with the possibility of this job that provided me the opportunity to spend a truly fantastic and heartwarming day with our two children Sarah and Coy.Now, if I can just make it thru tomorrow, their first day of school--Sarah in 3rd and Coy in 1st--and my first day alone in almost 9 years without a child with me while I negotiate our daily lives. I can guarantee there wont be a dry eye in my house as I send my little WLVR mascots off to school, while their mom counts the minutes until that yellow bus brings them back home to me. Wish me strength, will you? We are busy preparing the homes for summer useage, and finally have the weather cooperating with us!Last weekend, we were able to sneak away for a quick camping trip out by Red Hill Lookout, where the elevation is 5020. We did get a full gauntlet of weather--rain, snow, sun, and finally cloudy! It did give us a little break on Saturday, however, with just mostly cloudy, and we were able to continue with our plans to cook a prime rib in the dutch oven (which was fantastic!). We enjoyed our trip out with friends and family, some coming from the West Side of the state, in order to catch a little turkey hunting, and just some time with a campfire. Shana A peek at Cindis worldWallowa County FairSummer is still upon us, but summer is now ending sooner than later. You can always get a good judge of what is left of summer when the Wallowa County Fair comes around. Always the first weekend in August, our small fair is a family affair. The County Fair is run almost entirely by community volunteers, it has many attractions but not the typical fair attractions like carnivals, admittance fees, no big name singers coming into town. But, there are chickens, rabbits, and lots of 4-H and FFA kids that have been working on their animal projects like pig, sheep, and steer sometimes for the better part of a year. Plus, throw in some of the best cooks in the county that want the blue ribbons and lots of people will bring in their quilts, garden produce, flowers, and photos all displayed with pride at the Cloverleaf Hall. Most of the time, you can see all the fathers bright and early cooking breakfast at the volunteer staffed Food Booth, fiddle music, and homemade pies and ice cream. Local people turn out to purchase the market animals at the auction. It is extremely rewarding walking thru our County Fair. You get to see plenty of kids, working hard, and the complete support of their community at their fingertips. wallowalakevacationrentals.comcindi@wallowalakevacationrentals.com Location: Joseph, OR.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Testimonials Our kids played on the... Our kids played on the tree swing for the majority of their days while at the Huckleberry Meadow.....we had to pull them away just to go and see the sights! The deer that bed beside the cabin are just like family...they liked to join us for dinner on the deck...which Natalie thought was super cool, but cautious Mom shooed them away! Thanks again for the great little place! Lance and Monique It was like our own little home in the woods....... I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful time that our family had at Huckleberry Meadow cabin. It was like our own little home in the woods. We were so surprised with how well stocked the cabin was. I had packed a few things that I was sure would NOT be in the cabin, like: Flash lights, spatula, cleaning supplies, toys for the kids, cheese grader and more. Boy were we surprised to see that the cabin already had all that and more. Your cabin has things that I dont even have in my house. There was not one thing that I needed and couldnt find. We home school our 4 children and it was wonderful how much hands on learning we all got and how much we enjoyed it. The kids loved the swing and the large yard. They were delighted to run through the sprinkler to cool off. There was several deer and their baby fawns up at the cabin everyday and as they ate the grass in the yard, our kids were thrilled to be so close to Bambi! Gibson Family A peek at Cindis worldHells Canyon Mule DaysYou can always tell when it is the first weekend of September, because Hells Canyon Mule Days activity is bustling! This small excerpt is taken from their website! In the Spring of 1981, local ranchers and packers met with representatives of the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce and USDA Forest Service to explore the idea of putting together a new county event. As a result, the mule - tough, intelligent, individualistic, often maligned, but the mainstay of the many packers and outfitters working in Wallowa County - was elevated to center stage for the first annual Hells Canyon Mule Days celebration on September 19 - 20, 1981.Hells Canyon was an appropriate title because that area owes most of its early settlement and development to the mule which predominantly served as a major means of transportation to gain access to this rugged region of the county.Given the well-known independence of Mule Days’ long eared star, the entertaining, action-packed event has met its initial goal, both mule skinners and spectators a like can be part of this family oriented mule show, with events and games for all ages.wallowalakevacationrentals.comcindi@wallowalakevacationrentals.com Location: Joseph, OR.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

I am surprised, though, that they arent wiped out, because we spent the whole day in the woods today and supposedly fresh air knocks people out....maybe that is the over 18 years of age crowd?Today was the first day that we took our snowmobiles out to Sled Springs area and ran them around. It was so unbelievably beautiful out there, so very quiet, and did I mention beautiful? There is something so awe inspiring about being in the woods in the snow.....it is so quiet that you swear you can hear the flakes hit the ground. Today, there were such huge flakes that they quickly covered our pickup, and our impromptu picnic. Huge, fat, fluffy flakes that just fell heavily on the earth....it was a magical experience!Sometimes we take our snowmobiles and go out to Salt Creek Summit because that is where the best snow is, the groomed trails, and the warming shack, but it is also where all of the people go, and today, our family just needed some quiet family time before Christmas, New Years, and tax prep time comes around. We rode around for a couple of hours, covering ground that is my husbands old stomping ground for elk, and also the ground that he introduced me to this year for my first elk hunt. It sure looks different with about 2 feet of snow covering it! A great day was definitely had by all!Until next time, we hope that you and yours have a great Christmas and a safe New Years! The last of three schools to hold classes in town, the structure towersover the rest of the community. Built in 1916, The Flora School served as a magnet school for much of the North End, and drew students from Arko, Lost Prairie, and Paradise districts, to name a few. Upon completion, the school was considered the best proportioned and supplied in the entire county. It was the scene of many dances, Christmas pagents, and plays during its nearly sixty years of service. Nice furnishings, nice log beds, nicely stocked, and well....just plain nice! Anne A peek at Cindis worldThe Different Sides of Wallowa LakeI often get asked what side of Wallowa Lake is a specific home on. And, being a born and raised person of Wallowa County, I have had to readjust my terminology from the Foot of the Lake and the Head of the Lake to more specific North, South, East, and West sides of Wallowa Lake.If a home is at the North end of Wallowa Lake, (Foot), this is the side of the lake that has a really spectacular view of Wallowa Lake and Mount Joseph and the Eagle Cap Wilderness. I often say that if you dont want to be at the hub bub of the activities, but want to appreciate Natures Work, this is the side of Wallowa Lake that you should try and stay on.If a home is at the West side of Wallowa Lake (more of the Residential, READ: QUIETER, section), I often tell people that this is the side of Wallowa Lake that you will want to bring your boat, fishing pole, or life jacket and just settle into a slower pace. Since there is no road that connects the West side to the South end, you will have to drive back into Joseph, and around Wallowa Lake to get to the South end (where the activities are). This side of the Lake has more locals, more summer full time residents, that are here to enjoy, relax, and they will gladly welcome you to their side, if you can slow down, (mentally and on the gas pedal), and experience what it would be like to live here for 6 months even though you may only be here for less than a week. The South end (Head) of Wallowa Lake is the resort side of Wallowa Lake. This is where the majority of our homes are located. The resort side of Wallowa Lake offers shops, restaurants, loads of deer, Wallowa Lake Tramway, and kid friendly activities like go carts, mini golf, horse rides, bumper boats, and arcades. This is a good side of the lake for families with kids that want to walk to the activities. This is also where the Marina is located for all of your boating and fishing advice! The East side of Wallowa Lake is where you will drive so there arent any lodging options here, but plenty of wide spots to turn off and enjoy that incredible view of the Mountains, or perhaps the person trying to waterski for the first time! Whichever side of Wallowa Lake fits your families needs, we have a home for you. So, chose a side and then chose your dates, and then chose us! We will help you find the perfect home for that much needed family vacation!Until next time--Cindiwallowalakevacationrentals.comcindi@wallowalakevacationrentals.com Location: Joseph, OR.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Clean, comfortable, classy, stylish, accommodating, nicely stocked, and wow.....the view! Thank you for providing your fantastic home to us. We loved it so much, we called Cindy before we left and scheduled our next trip! Terry and Kip A peek at Cindis worldSchool starts tomorrow!School starts in Enterprise tomorrow, and started in Joseph on Monday. Ollie and Martha A peek at Cindis worldPromiseIf you have been reading any of the other blogs, I often pull from a really great book called ABOUT WALLOWA COUNTY. This is another entry from it that I think is interesting! The settlement of Promise was twenty five miles north of the town of Wallowa. The first two homesteaders came in 1891 and were considering what to call this new area. There were other places called Garden of Eden and Paradise not too far away, so they decided their settlement would be the Promised Land. It was call this until the post office opened in 1896 and shortened it to Promise. Their population in 1900 was 181. Shana A peek at Cindis worldJoan at Wallowa Lake Vacation RentalsIt is important to me to fill my positions here at WLVR with knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. A lot of people have only gotten to know me, so I wanted to introduce you to our staff. This time, we will introduce you to Joan! Joan says: I was born here in Wallowa County and was fortunate enough to spend my childhood growing up on the West side of Wallowa Lake. My days were days filled with exploring and hiking around on the moraine and in and on the water. What a great place to be!It did not take long living away from here while going to school to make me realize that living out of the county would not be an option for me. I married my high school sweetheart Keith. He also felt that living here was a must.We have two wonderful children, Vikki and Will.Keith’s Grandmother had built the small Russells Restaurant at the head of Wallowa Lake. I had planned on helping out at the restaurant one summer and ended up at that family business for over twenty years. We, along with Keith’s brother, purchased the business from Grandma Theresa. In 1995 we took down the old building and replaced it with the new Russells building that is there now. Vikki and Will had grown up in the kitchen and backyard of the old Russells building and then our two beautiful little grandchildren were about to spend their summers in the new building. It was time for us to sell our half of this business and enjoy our summers with our family outside the restaurant. We left with mixed emotions, excited to have summers free to enjoy all there is here to do, but realizing that we would miss the many friends that we had made over the years at this business. Over the years, we had come to know many of the families that return year after year to their summer homes, rentals and camping spots. It was fun to see their kids grow up and then return with their own children. The next years were my “Grandma time” enjoying time with my two grandchildren, Ashtin and Tate. When they were both in school, I need to get back to being busy and started working at Miller Plumbing. That was a fun and interesting job. As a dispatcher I learned of streets and addresses and homes that I never knew were here in the county. At the time I was working at Millers our son Will was developing his new business making handmade soap and body products. The new business, Beecrowbee was growing fast and he needed help there. That was my exit from the plumbing world to the soap and spa product world.About this time Cindi was also looking for someone to help out answering phones and taking reservation for WLVR. The job included visiting with people about vacationing at Wallowa Lake and answering question about the area. Seemed like a good fit for me. Many of the people calling in to make reservations were old friends and acquaintances from my years at Russells. It has been nice to revisit old friends and help to introduce this fantastic area to new visitors! wallowalakevacationrentals.comcindi@wallowalakevacationrentals.com Location: Joseph, OR.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Kimberly and Justin A peek at Cindis worldGirls WeekendI had the opportunity to spend a night up at Wallowa Lake last weekend with some of my best girlfriends that I have known for basically my whole life. What a fantastic weekend we had laughing about the days of high school, discussing our current lives which are wrapped around kids, family, jobs, etc., and where we were headed for in the future with politics, kids growing up, jobs, etc. I think we truly touched on about everything on the spectrum of life, and it occurred to me how truly lucky I am to have these girlfriends in my life. We stayed at the Ruby Peak Haven home and really got a full appreciation for what a great winter we have had so far! The trip up to the house was easily done in a 4x4 vehicle, and as we climbed up the mountain to the house, we were impressed with the quantity of snow. There has to be 3-4 feet of snow up there! We keep the road and driveway plowed so we always have access to the house, and where the snow has been piled for containment, it is probably 6 feet tall! The trees have a heavy layer of snow on them, and the roof has probably 2 feet of snow on it as well. It truly is a winter wonderland up there! Our day was spent mostly playing games, eating, enjoying a few cocktails, watching a movie, going for walks, taking pictures, and a quick snowball fight before the ones that started the fight dashed into the house for their protection. The Ruby Peak Haven house fit our needs perfectly! There was plenty of room for all of us to stretch out, but also plenty of sleeping area as well. Each of us had our own bed, and plenty of space to do our own thing. On the drive home from Wallowa Lake, I thought about how truly fortunate I am. I live in Wallowa County, have a great husband, 2 children that I adore, great family and friends and a job that I truly enjoy. I am blessed. It really was a fantastic weekend!I hope that you are enjoying this quieter time of the year, and that you are doing things that bring joy to your life. Lynn and Hal We have rented many resort homes before, but none that have been so... Greetings Cindi...............Just wanted to send you a note letting you know that we had a great time in are little cabin in the woods. What a cute place to spend three days. I have to say weve rented many resort homes before but none that have been so well outfitted as this one. There was just nothing a person needed while staying there. The day we were leaving I was still finding things for our use...........it was great. Anyway just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU for letting us stay in such a wonderful place. Leslie A peek at Cindis worldKaycee at Wallowa Lake Vacation RentalsWhen we started Wallowa Lake Vacation Rentals, it was pretty much a one woman show. I would take reservations, clean the cabin (yes, we started out with 1!), do the laundry, mow the yard, and pay the bills on behalf of the owner. Soon, we ended up taking on a few more clients so I had to add on staff here and there. About 5 years ago, I met with Myron Kirkpatrick who offers free business counseling and just wanted to do a review of sorts of how my business was doing, areas that I could improve, etc. I just wanted another persons professional opinion of how things looked when you werent in the \"eye of the storm\" if you will. One of the things that Myron instantly pointed out was that I have control issues. I already knew this, infact it is a family joke that I should be in a 12 step program for it! He suggested that if I could find an individual with a strong work ethic, detail oriented and believed in high standards of customer service , then I should consider having that special someone answer the phones which would provide me with some time to take care of some other areas. This I took with a grain of salt, and thought....that man is WRONG! I do not have control issues, and nobody could ever answer phones and make sure that the client is choosing the best house for their trip except me! His words, however, echoed and sat dormant brewing in my head. Enter Kaycee. Kaycee, her husband Jeff, and 3 children wanted to visit Wallowa Lake and they live in the Boise area. Kaycee called and booked the Rams Head Cottage for their stay. Over the next couple of times that Kaycee called, we chatted. She tells me the story of how Jeff and his family used to live here, and they love coming here. She then proceeded to tell me that Jeffs brother died as a teenager when they lived here. In my mind, I immediately thought of this guy that I knew by the name of Tony. (I had a huge crush on Tony when I was around 12. He was friends with my sister, was very handsome, very friendly, and I thought he was just the neatest guy. I remember when he died, and the impact it had on my sister. I was very sad over the whole ordeal. ) Listening to Kaycee tell her story brought goosebumps to my body. Turns out that the Tony that I knew was Jeffs brother! It was a very eerie conversation to have, but it just made us click that much more! Jeff and Kaycee visited that summer and we found time to get the families together and have dinner. I was amazed at how much Paige, their oldest daughter, looks like Tony. Luke looks more like Jeff, and Natalie the youngest looks like Kaycee. During dinner, Kaycee mentioned that she is battling MS and has made huge life adjustments to manage it. She is an advocate for MS and often is called upon to speak at different conventions. Kaycee also mentioned that with Natalie starting school, she was going to have to fill her time with something, and was thinking about a very part time job, one that offered flexibility for her kids schedule, wasnt too high stress, and would fit in with her very active family and their always-on-the-move lifestyle. She wasnt sure which job was going to fill her requirements, but she hoped to find something. Later that night, I was talking to Chad about Jeff and Kaycee and their family, and said that if I ever did think of someone to answer phones, Kaycee would be a perfect match. Through much planning on how this would work living in two different states, and planning, having Kaycee answer phones from her home in Boise became a reality!Kaycee is very knowledgeable of Wallowa County. Not only has she spent a lot of years coming here and visiting Jeffs old stomping ground, but once she started thinking of working for us, she started asking questions, keeping a notebook on activities, restaurants, events, learning things about the local area and history, etc. Eventhough she lives a little ways from us, she constantly does her homework on what we have to offer, and can offer up a unique opinion on vacationing here as she has seen them from the angle of a visitor vs. a local. Kaycee answers phones for us most Wednesdays from 8 - 1 (PST). When I am away from the office, I know that having Kaycee on the phones is the closest that I can get to having me answer the phones. She is punctual, reliable, responsible, very detail oriented, knowledgeable and willing to help you chose the best home for your stay! Those are very big traits to pack into one person, but she exceeds all of my expectations. I am lucky to have her as a staff member, but also as a friend. I am sure if you call in on Wednesday, you too will have a new friend that works for Wallowa Lake Vacation Rentals!wallowalakevacationrentals.comcindi@wallowalakevacationrentals.com Location: Joseph, OR.its NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

A peek at Cindis worldGirls WeekendI had the opportunity to spend a night up at Wallowa Lake last weekend with some of my best girlfriends that I have known for basically my whole life.
