The experience of silence and tranquility is unexpected at the Heavenly Valley Retreat; you feel like you are a much less populated island. We are located on a private street above the congestion of Honolulu, Hawaii bordering a wilderness area. We are next to a stream and below the main road in a valley so the dominate sounds in the neighborhood are the music of singing birds and the trade winds blowing through the palm trees. It is the ideal place to get deep rest and rejuvenate. Even though we are above the city, we are only a few minutes from gorgeous beaches, great board and wind surfing areas, excellent restaurants, shopping malls and the University of Hawaii in Manoa Valley. Surroundings On a private residential street, this peaceful subdivision with 12 Hawaiian designed homes sits adjacent to a wilderness area. Waiomao Stream runs in back of the street next to an ancient Taro field and below the majestic Koolau Mountains including Mount Olympus, one of the tallest peaks in the range. Our apartment is located on the first floor of our home with its own private entrance. The home sits a couple hundred feet below a large Buddhist temple which has a large gold leafed and granite Buddhas and many smaller ones. You can see parts of the temple complex from within the subdivision. The grounds of the temple are very attractive with a commanding view of Honolulu. It is worth a visit. At the end of the valley you can hike to the top of the Koolaus Mountains. The trail climbs past seven falls whose water comes from a large crater, Kau crater, that was the favorite swimming hole of one of the Hawaiian princesses 100 years ago. The hike offers wonderful views of the Koolaus, the city and the ocean. The retreat is a ten minute drive from the University of Hawaii in Manoa and 7 minutes from Chaminade University. Interior Space The studio apartment was designed by my brother who was a very successful tour escort, the impresario of the tour business, to maximize the use of the space. The sleeping area and the foyer were both added onto the studio apartment. The full wall mirror in the kitchen gives the feeling that the apartment is twice as large as it really is. A new north entrance has also been added. The apartment has wood and imported tile floors. There is also a lovely wool rug with a tropical flower design. The TV is suspended from the ceiling to conserve space. The area inside the studio seems to melt into the exterior garden area through the numerous windows in the apartment.
