Turn the other way down the road, and, if it is Sunday, the Makuu farmers market is the place to browse, then 10 minutes to the old fashioned hippie town of Pahoa; drive the scenic Kalapana-Kapoho loop, see the lava flow, hot ponds, tide pools, see if the dolphins are in at Kehena Beach, or, on Sunday drummers hit the beach.
