Erard pianos were considered one of the finest pianos in the world during the 19th century, competing with Bösendorfer as the most prestigious pianos in Europe. Numerous famous composers cherished Erards inlcuding Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Rubinstein and Paderewski. Parisian Erards are very rare, especially in the U.S. Erards possess a very clean, open tone that generally is absent in overstrung American pianos.
The fallboard shows "Erard Paris" in inlaid brass . This elegant touch was common on some fine European pianos made during the 19th century-- the American pianos generally used a decal instead.
